The Origin of the Haunting Caves Sub Mission can be started once you collect the item on the slightly raised rock with the candles before mantling up after the first Kyokotsu, the Water Umi-Bozus and the Nure-Onna as well as the adult Bakegani.
Upon collecting the item, the Origin of the Haunting Caves will be available to play at the Battle Scroll and tasks you with going through the caves staying left at the fork where you would go right to fight Hino-Enma, you can now go left and follow the path across the Spirit Vein to the lower section where the Cavern Ascetic boss will spawn. Put this CQB Master down to conclude the Origin of the Hunting Caves Sub Mission.
