The Dark Roots mission is a very tough one to get through as there are plenty of Sentries, Waira, Great Gaki, Jailers, Soldiers, Spiders and a Nuppeppo who won’t bother you unless you interrupt its lunch. You need to collect Spirit Stone Boxes as you descend down through the Spirit Tree which need placing on the Modules to then open the doors and create shortcuts back to the 1 Shrine (before you get to the boss door).
As you descend down through the mission most of the enemies can be run past if you don’t feel like fighting them then once you’re on the lower level with the Waira and the blood, push through to the elevator at the back of the cavern where you will then go down and face off against a spectacularly tough boss: Hiruko.
Hiruko will initially be in Human form until you take off about 40% of his health then transform into a full Yokai form with 100% health and some attacks which feel pretty broken including AOE ice and fire blasts which seem to be magnetised to your character. At the time of writing I have killed every boss in NIOH 3 and Hiruko in Dark Roots is the only one I would say needs those hit boxes reworking as even upon dodging with Ninja abilities to extend the invincibility frames you still seem to take a hit or 2 so keep your distance and learn through failure.
