Masters are Elite level bosses who are incredibly proficient in one weapon type whether it’s for Ninja or Samurai. Some Masters are locked off behind story progression where you need the Guardian Spirit to get across the Spirit Veins and some are hidden inside Myths and with there being 13 of them in the game you will have a lot of opportunities to test your own skills and resovle.
Wherever a Master is located, don’t expect an easy time of it in the fights and ensure you manage your Ki as even if you’re end game and you go back to the Warring States for example, there are Masters there who can shred your health bar with one grapple attack never mind everything else they can throw at you alongside.
In NIOH 3 there are 3 main Eras where you can find Masters and if there are any who are just a step above your skill level at the time you can access them, push through to the end of the game, go through NG+ then come back with much more powerful weaponry after switching back to your first playthrough which you can do on the map then rest at a Shrine for the changes to take effect. You will then stand a much better chance of bringing these guys down.

The 13 Masters who you can fight throughout NIOH 3 and the rewards you will obtain as you take them down are as follows:
Fuma Kotaro
Location: Warring States, Iinoya, Omomiji Junction.
Vocation: Talon Master.
Rewards: Flying Buck Talon Skill.
Before you can fight Fuma Kotaro, who is a Ninja Talon Master you firstly need to complete the One With the Shadows Myth in the Iinoya region. With the Myth completed you can then take on Fuma Kotaro in the same building where the Myth ended after you take down the Ninja Yoki boss. Fuma Kotaro is very fast and those extended Talons give him a surprising amount of range and being a Ninja he has a very high agility so use your own speed to keep up with him whilst avoiding slower attacks as they will rarely connect.
Taigen Sessai
Location: Warring States, Lake Hamana, Horie Castle-Outwork.
Vocation: Axe Master.
Rewards: Lumber Chop Skill.
You will need to complete the Disaster at Lake Hamana Myth which begins as soon as you enter Lake Hamana. Silence Daidarra-Bocchi then rest at the Horie Castle-Outwork Shrine and head East and North to the Grave which you need to interact with to summon Taigen Sessai, an Axe Master who wields a massive Hammer.
Give Taigen is a Samurai you do not want to get caught getting hit as your health bar will drop off in very large chunks per hit, especially if you go through this one around the level 30-40 mark so come back later in the game and reciprocate the Masters beating he’s trying to lay on you just don’t go for a swim.
Ito Ittosai
Location: Warring States, Futamata, Tealeaf Village.
Vocation: Odachi Master.
Rewards: Tiger’s Blade Odachi Skill.
Head up to the far East side of the Tealeaf Village and enter the building above where the Soldiers are and talk to Ito Ittosai who you can then challenge and with him being a Samurai wielding an Odachi at Master level it’s amazing how fast your health bar can disappear. Range wise as well that weapon of his feels like it goes for days so get used to double dodging to create enough distance.
Offence wise you’re pretty sorted treating him like a normal boss, go in with Fire for damage and Lightning to slow him down, use aerial attacks if Ito is doing Horizontal attacks or doge to the side and punish if he’s trying to come down on your head until Ito is defeated.
Sugitani Zenjubo
Location: Warring States, Lake Sanaru, Lake Sanaru (North).
Vocation: Tonfa Master.
Rewards: Urgency Tonfa Skill.
Sugitani Zenjubo is a Master who is on an Island off the West coast of Lake Sanaru which you can’t access until you have cleared the Sacred Mountain Defiled Story Mission in the Heian Era and you’ll be glad you can’t fight this dude any earlier as he is a mid-end game Master with a serious amount of skill I don’t recommend you try to put down until you’re in Bakumatsu.
Sugitani is incredibly fast and he has a wide arsenal of Ninjitsu to help him reduce your health bar including bombs and shuriken. He also has the power to slam you straight into the water even when you’re not near the edge so use aerial attacks sparingly as he is remarkably proficient at sending you for an early swim.
Demon Slayer
Location: Heian, Hachijo, Rajomon: Suzuka Avenue.
Vocation: Cestus Master.
Rewards: Archer’s Impact Cestus Skill.
Demon Slayer is a very hard hitting Cestus Master who is found in the Box’s Guardian Myth which you can begin in the Hachijo region by going just North from the Rajomon: Suzuka Avenue Shrine. Follow the path to the marker, smash through the boxes and use the Spirit Vein to get over to the building where you can summon the Demon Slayer.
Attack wise this guy won’t really let up throughout the entire fight and he uses incredibly powerful kicks and punches to bring you down. You know you’re up against a formidable fighter when a punch hurts a lot more than a sword and you need to stay away from those combos unless you like being freed from this Mortal Coil. Use Fire and Lightning for increased damage and put him down by any means just be mindful as after the fight as part of the Myth you will need to take down a One-Eyed Oni and a Ninja Yoki boss so don’t leave yourself short of Elixers.
Tomoe Gozen
Location: Heian, Kamo Village, Funaokayama.
Vocation: Switchglaive Master.
Rewards: Thin Air Switchglaive Skill.
Tomoe Gozen is a Switchglaive Master who you can spawn by firstly completing the Follow the Soldier’s Shadow Myth for Minamoto no Yoshitsune where you defeat the Yasha who then turns into Tomoe Gozen. Head to the building East from the Funaokayama Shrine and engage her in battle.
You won’t get an easy time of it here, Tomoe is very proficient in all 3 stances of the Switchglaive and being a Samurai she will smack with each hit. Counters are useful against her as well as like, most of other Human enemies, Lightning to slow and Fire to inflict heavy damage. Keep the pressure on as her Ki will dissipate quickly when guarding leaving you free to do a powerful grapple.
Shinran
Location: Heian, Awawa no Tsuji, Kamo Riverbank.
Vocation: Splitstaff Master.
Rewards: Changing Ways Splitstaff Skill.
Shinran is a reclusive Master who can be found by crossing the bridge, going right then using the Spirit Vein to get across to the small area where he resides waiting for an opponent to come along and he has been keeping himself busy training with that deadly Splitstaff.
Shinran is a very agile Ninja who wields that Splitstaff with great flair and power none of which is good news for your health bar if you get caught up in a combo or your Ki meter if you try and block. Agility is your best friend her as is raw power, try not to go blow for blow with Shinran as it’s a good way to go back to the Shrine, instead, dash in when he’s done a combo, get a few hits in then back away before his next barrage.
Nasu No Yoichi
Location: Heian, Nishiichi, Driftwood Fortress.
Vocation: Archery Master.
Rewards: Falcon Kick Ninja Sword Skill.
Nasu no Yoichi is one of those Masters who can be incredibly frustrating to take on but we’ll get to that. To find Nasu no Yoichi, go South West from the Driftwood Fortress Shrine which is accessible after you clear the Nishiichi Enemy Base. Use the Spirit Vein to get across the water then run up the hill and enter the fray.
Nasu no Yoichi is a very proficient Archer so you need to be incredibly proficient at dodging otherwise you will get used to dying. Use the debris and rocks as cover and get the timing down to double dodge just before those arrows hit and the sooner you get up to the ledge where he is firing from the sooner the torment ends. Nasu is very skilled with his Ninja Sword so don’t expect a straight beatdown when you have avoided the arrows, he also has an impressive amount of defence so break his guard to inflict decent damage.
Sawamura Yasusuke
Location: Bakumatsu, Shijo, Shijo Depression.
Vocation: Tonfa Master.
Rewards: Fleetfoot Tonfa Skill.
Rest at the Shijo Depression Shrine in the Shijo region which you can do after you clear the Enemy Base then go North and enter the building to find Sawamura Yasusuke, a very proficient Tonfa Master.
Being in the Bakumatsu Era, Sawamura is a big step up from any Master you will have fought previously and I found myself in trouble on more than one occasion as his strikes can smash your Ki bar in a couple of hits level you open to a life ending grapple so manage your Ki, use your Guardian Spirit and even your living weapon if you need to, you can rest and resupply once you take the win against Yasusuke.
Ishikawa Goemon
Location: Bakumatsu, Shirakawa, Yasaka Shrine.
Vocation: Talon Master.
Rewards: Beyond Infinity Talon Skill.
Head South from the Yasaka Shrine in the Shirakawa region pass the Itsumade and down to the walled off temple in the Gion region where you can summon Ishikawa Goemon from the grave and this guy is not happy about being challenged.
Ishikawa is a very powerful Talon Master who seems to the entire Talon skill tree unlocked and a Ki meter which is seemingly never ending as it’s very hard to guard break him before your own Ki runs out and if it does even level 150+ players will be back at the Shrine as those Talons will blend your health bar to 0 very easily. Use the space in the arena to create distance then use Onmyo and Ninjitsu to attack at a distance, this is not a Master I recommend getting to close to as you will pay the price in doing so. Personal space is surprisingly important to this Masterful Ghost.
Takahashi Deishu
Location: Bakumatsu, Nijo Castle, Horikawa Market.
Vocation: Spear Master.
Rewards: Tornado Spear Skill.
Go North from the Horikawa Market Shrine in the Nijo Castle region staying on the West path to avoid the Gatling gun at the top of the stairs if you take the Eastern path. Enter the Temple and speak to Takahashi who will ask if you feel up to a duel. I don’t recommend saying yes until you have your best gear, Spirits, Onmyo and Ninjitsu equipped and you might want to farm a few more levels before taking this Spear Master on.
My recommended hesitation comes from the fact the Spear Takahashi wields has incredible range and more power than nigh on any boss you will have faced up until this point, he can easily half health you per hit then finish you off as you try and heal. The fact his Spear is Wind based gives him a much higher damage output than it would have if it were neutral but that’s a challenge you need to overcome and given what you’ve gone through in NIOH 3 to get to this point you will have Takahashi dropped soon enough.
Shishido Kagetoshi
Location: Bakumatsu, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Maruta Riverved.
Vocation: Kusarigama Master.
Rewards: Blade Spin Kusarigama Skill.
Shishido Kagetoshi is another Master who is very well tucked away and to find him go East then North up the stairs from the Maruta Riverbed watching out for the Mermaid ambush as if you were going towards the Enemy Base. Drop down off the left side after going through the water where the Wind Oni-Bi spawn, kick the tree down if you want a shortcut and enter the building on your right.
Summon Shishido from the grave then get ready for a very unpleasant fight against a Kusarigama Master and being a Ninja class he is incredibly fast, agile and can dodge the majority of your attacks as soon as you think to press the button. The tight confines and high range of the Kusarigama mean you aren’t safe anywhere in this arena so stay as agile as you can and conserve that Ki meter opting for 1 or 2 strikes instead of going for massive combos. If he gets old of you it’s game over so keep distance and use hard hitting skills, Guardian Spirits, Ninjitsu and Yokai Summons such as Flying Bolt or the Demons if you have them.
Takashima Shuhan
Location: Bakumatsu, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Imperial Palace.
Vocation: Axe Master.
Rewards: Tri-Spark Axe Skill.
Takashima Shuhan is an Axe Master who is tucked away more than any other Master in NIOH 3 as before you access the grave where you summon Takashima you firstly need to have completed the Beast of the Underworld Sub Mission where Thomas Glover then gives you access to all of the Cannons throughout the Bakumatsu Era. Go East from the Imperial Palace Shrine to the bridge then look left to see 2 Soldiers up on the platform who you can snipe.
You then want to look at the pink spiked crystals which block your path from going behind the platform, look in front of the crystals across the street to see the Cannon you can fire to clear the pink crystals allowing you to then go around to the back of the area and summon Takashima Shuhan, an incredibly powerful Samurai wielding a sodding great Hammer.
Takashima is an Axe Master who favours high stance for the most part meaning the attacks he uses will crush you Ki meter and then your health bar with virtually every swing so use your agility and don’t try and tank the hits unless you like respawning at the Shrine. Use your agility, Onmyo and Ninjitsu to help being this guy down where the strength of your build will determine whether you’re able to come away with the win or if you need to do a bit more levelling before going up against Takashima again.
