Bakumatsu is a very dangerous open Era which has a lot of fortified enemy positions which are supported by either Gatling Guns which can shred your health bar or cannons which will blast you straight back to a Shrine. Enemy wise it’s more of the same who you have been taking down, Mermaids, Waira, Yoki, Soldiers, Spiders make a bigger appearance so stay out of the North East if you’re not a fan of 8 legged creatures dropping down to have a chat with your face.
1864 CE Bakumatsu Walkthrough
There is plenty to do in the Bakumatsu Era and given the amount of and variation the collectibles, missions and bosses have I will break the Bakumatsu Era down into the following 11 categories which are:
Bosses
There are 43 bosses to take down as you make your way through the Bakumatsu Era. Several are optional but the majority can be found either through the story, in the Myths or out in the World. Refer to the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu bosses for a look at how to find and take them all down.
Chijiko
Chijiko are acquired by shooting them out of the sky then petting them where you will receive a Transformed Art for one of the many weapon classes and there are 13 to be collected in the Bakumatsu Era. Refer to the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Chijiko for a look at how to find all 13.

Enemy Bases are strongholds which have either Yokai or Humans inside a set area and you need to go in and clear out all of the enemies for the base to be reclaimed for the people of Japan. One of the Enemy Bases is part of a Myth and so make sure you’re well geared before going into them. Dark Realms in the Bakumatsu Era aren’t considered Enemy Bases, however, Dark Realms can overlay Enemy Bases making them appear different than normal. Refer to the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Enemy Bases to see how to clear all 9.
Hot Springs
Hot Springs are a good way to take 5 from the chaos of the combat and gameplay as well as giving you small, incremental healing benefits as long as you’re in the Spring. The most important part of the Hot Springs though is each one you bathe in will give you 2 Yokai Teardrops which you can use at a Sudama shop for some pretty decent items. There are 7 Hot Springs in the Bakumatsu Era so refer to the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Hot Springs to see where all 7 can be found.
Kodama
Kodama are green Sprites who can be collected by clearing the local area of aggro’d enemies then holding R1 to collect the Kodama as long as they aren’t hiding in their hats. You will then receive Kodama Merit which you can use at a Shrine to activate a Kodama Blessing increasing Elixir drop rate / efficacy so these little dudes are well worth sniffing out.
There are 22 Kodama to find in the Bakumatsu Era and they can be found across near enough every region and most of them are tucked behind bosses, Bases or progression. Refer to the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Kodama to see where each of these little dudes can be found.
Lesser Crucibles
Lesser Crucibles are small, closed off sections of the map which sometimes lock out the main path through an area you need to progress the story of NIOH 3, however, most of the Lesser Crucibles are found off the beaten track.
Clear all of the enemy waves in each of the Lesser Crucibles which do open up more regions and make other collectibles accessible. Once the Yokai are dead you can then break the Crucible Spike at the back of the Lesser Crucible to then cleanse the area completely. Refer to the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Lesser Crucibles to see where all 7 can be found as well as the Yokai you’ll face in each one.
Myths
Myths in NIOH 3 are essentially non-replayable Sub Missions as in you only get to do the Myths once per playthrough which is a shame as some of them are a lot better than the repeatable Sub Missions with a small handful of exceptions which cause Myths to, in part, be playable via the Battle Scroll.
Myths will be marked on the Map as well as you get close to the area where they can be started or by upgrading your Exploration Level to then reveal the Map and all other elements found inside a given region. Refer to the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Myths to see how to begin and complete all 11 required Myths.
Scampuss
Scampuss are small, Yokai Cats who, once you get close and try to pet will be startled and run away, it’s down to you to give chase and track the Scampuss down which is a lot easier after you acquire the Gale Sprint once you clear the Crucible Manifested story mission. There are 5 Scampuss you need to chase down in the Bakumatsu Era. Refer to the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Scampuss to see how to successfully chase all of them down.
Six Jizo
Six Jizo are stone monuments dedicated to 6 legendary Monks and you pray at them similarly to how you would pray at a Shrine. Some Jizo will require you to make offerings to them where as others need to be rebuilt before they can be used.
When you pray at a Six Jizo you will receive a new currency called Jizo Merit which you can use to unlock special blessings at the Shrines similar to the way you unlock Kodama Blessings except these Jizo Blessing are focused around the Crucible increasing things like melee damage and Elixir drop rate which are very useful. Refer to NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Six Jizo for a look at how to pray at the 7 required statues.
Story Missions
Main Missions are there to advance the story in NIOH 3 and will be marked on your map with a gold circle indicating where you need to go. However, NIOH 3 is by no means a simple or easy game by any stretch of the imagination so I strongly recommend you go through every area, acquire very collectible, clear all of the Lesser Crucibles and Enemy Bases as doing so will increase your stats in that region as well as give you some pretty decent rewards along the way. Refer to the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Main Missions if you would like to see how to complete all 3 available.
Sub Missions
Sub Missions in NIOH 3 are usually Myths which turn into Sub Missions or they can be standalone missions which usually hold a boss but always hold some sort of reward and unlike in the first 2 NIOH games, the Sub Misisons are completely optional.
Given the difficulty of some of the Sub Missions you will be thankful that they are optional as well as one mission to note is where you need to bring down the 5 toughest bosses in the first Era back to back with only momentary respite to collect the loot and hopefully Elixer(s) the previous boss dropped. Refer to the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Sub Missions if you would like to see how to access and complete all 7 Sub Missions available.
That’s the 1864 CE Bakumatsu walkthrough complete, I hope it helped you get through the first Era of NIOH 3.
