There are 7 Sub Missions in the Bakumatsu Era of NIOH 3, none of them are friendly and 1 in particular has 3 bosses to take down if its your first time in the region with the other being a full on Military stronghold which also holds a boss you can kill to make the 2nd Crucible a lot easier to complete. The final Sub Mission requires you to chase down a Yokai which is a new style of Sub Mission if nothing else.
2 Sub Missions won’t become available until you are done with the main Story in the Bakumatsu Era and you will more than likely be thankful for that anyway as the bosses in these 2 Sub Missions are brutal but that said they do give a lot of rewards.
Fortunately, none of the Sub Missions are required in NIOH 3 if you are just after the achievements but that said, if they’re available, why would you not want to take on the challenge which is, after all, what these games are designed to do: Test you as a gamer!.
Bakumatsu Sub Missions
The 7 Sub Missions in the 1864 CE Bakumatsu Era you can complete one of which locks off access to a lot of new areas in Bakumatsu are as follows:

Shop For Your Mug NowBeast Of The Underworld
Recommended Level: 109
Rewards: $25,200, 43,116 Amrita, x2 Yokai Teardrop.
Go to the Torii Gate just up and to the right of the Shichijo Avenue Ruins Shrine in the Shichijo region. Kill the Shinsengumi Member Hattori Takeo boss then run to the Spirit Vein which you can take down thus beginning the Beast of the Underworld Sub Mission which task you with going down through a very precarious area taking out plenty of Soldiers Cannon operators and Yokai as you go.
After you go through the area with the Tsurara-Onna, kill the Skeleton Warrior who wakes up to get you from behind then look right, straight and left to find 3 Cannon operators which can greatly increase the danger of this area. Snipe them if you can but even with a powerful Hand Cannon it will take more than 1 shot apiece to bring them down. You can sprint to them but in doing so you will more than likely take a Cannon or 2 to the dome which won’t help if you want to stay alive.
Once you’re at the top of the next hill, rest at the Shrine then enter the Warehouse where you will meet, Kasha, a very powerful, fast, Fire boss who will race around the arena setting everything she can ablaze including you so go in with Lightning, Wind or Water elements and defend against Fire. Put Kasha down to conclude the Beast of the Underworld Sub Mission, then after completing it for the first time you can speak to Thomas Glover who will then grant you permission to use the Cannons found throughout the Bakumatsu region which is key to unlocking some collectibles and even a Master.
Nobunaga's Blade
Recommended Level: 112.
Rewards: $26,000, 48,636 Amrita, x1 Yokai Teardrop.
Once you have completed the Accursed Temple main mission you will gain access to the Nobunaga’s Blade Sub Mission which is accessible from the Battle Scroll and to get through it you need to chase down a Kappa. You will have a lot of tough Yokai to take down as you go as well as good amount of high-powered Soldiers all of who can 1-2 shot you.
At the end of the mission you will need to take down a series of Yokai which then spawns the Red Kappa boss who is joined by a Kyokotsu. Focus on the Red Kappa if you’re strong enough, if not, take out the Kyokotsu then focus on the Red Kappa to finish up the Nobunaga’s Blade Sub Mission.
Solitary Blade
Recommended Level: 128
Rewards: $29,400, 75,580 Amrita, x2 Yokai Teardrop.
Before you can even think about attempting the Solitary Blade Sub Mission you firstly need to have completed the Peerless Katana Myth for Takasugi Shinsaku who will give you the Mibu Temple Key. You then need to go to the Mibu Temple-Main Gate Shrine in the Mibu region accessible by purifying the Lesser Crucible in the South West of the Nijo Castle region then up and through the Enemy Base.
Be prepared, the Mibu Temple is full of very powerful Samurai and Ninja as well as Soldiers on the roof and towers strategically placed to give you a bad day. Use ranged weapons to take out the Soldiers with the artillery as you fight your way up and around to the Temple doors.
The Solitary Blade Sub Mission is a very important one as the boss who you will need to take down is Okita Soji, an incredibly strong Samurai who, if you don’t take him down here will be in the Crucible at the end of the Scion of the Gods story mission giving you a back to back fight against both Okita and Tokugawa Yoshinobo making the final Bakumatsu Crucible infinitely more challenging to clear.
Okita Soji is one of the leaders of the Shinsengumi and also their most prized fighter despite the fact he’s sick as a dog he can still lay down severe punishment with combos that will hurt your ancestors they hit so hard. Use Lightning or Sloth Talismans to slow not that they’ll last for long on him but overcome the challenge to complete the Solitary Blade Sub Mission.
Kiyomizu Defiled
Recommended Level: 124.
Rewards: $28,600, 69,164 Amrita, x2 Yokai Teardrop.
Kiyomizu Defiled is a Sub Mission I don’t recommend you go through until you are very confident in your abilities as there are 3 bosses to take down as you progress through the Sub Mission which you can begin by taking the Spirit Vein up to the Eastern half of the region, 2 of then are Shinsengumi Ghosts and the 3rd is an Onmoraki, a poison based over sized Turkey who is very good at ruining your day.
Use the Spirit Vein to get up the Eastern side of the Kiyomizu region and head up through the area which then begins the Kiyomizu Defiled Sub Mission, head through and cross the bridge infested with Gaki and jump across the gaps in the stairs to the Wraiths.
Kill them all whilst you keep pushing up through the region, destroy the Ubume and the other Wraiths before dropping down to the platform where you can fight the very powerful Hijikata Toshizo, a Shinsengumi Samurai boss who loves to parry and punish.
With Hijikata dead, continue through Kiyomizu taking out the Ubume and Sunakake-Baba whilst pushing up through to the Spirit Vein you can take to the rafters. Snipe the Gaki taking note of the Thorned Gaki hiding behind the pillar so move quickly to avoid getting knocked off, drop down again taking care to not be paralysed by the Karakasa Umbrellas then finally kill the Flying Bolt.
Drop down and kill the Thorned Gaki before taking on the Karasu Tengu who is accompanied by yet more red Wraiths. Kondo Isami will then be waiting for you on the next platform and this dude can crush you very easily so don’t play about, put him down as soon as you can using anything you have left, you can restock at the next Shrine after the fight.
Use the Spirit Vein, rest at the Shrine whether you took a beating or not before using the next Spirit Vein to fly down to the Onmaroki boss who loves nothing more than to send you back up to the Shrine and can do so with ease. Whether it’s by poison or pure physical damage, there is no easy way to bring this budgie down. Use Fire and Lightning to make your time a bit easier then go full Living Weapon to help take the win.
Crucible Tour
Recommended Level: 119.
Rewards: $27,400, 59,616 Amrita, x1 Yokai Teardrop.
The Crucible Tour Sub Mission will become available at the Battle Scroll once you have completed the Kiyomizu Defiled Sub Mission and is a Yokai beatdown against plenty of Yokai followed by a Gozuki then an Onryoki boss battle so all in all it can be a rough time of things all determined by how well you do against the earlier Yokai before the bosses show up. Save your Living Weapon for the Onryoki and have powerful Ninjitsu especially Lightning based to slow and inflict heavy damage across the board.
Drawn To Yokai Incense
Recommended Level: 124.
Rewards: x1 Yokai Teardrop.
The Drawn to Yokai Essence Sub Mission will become available at the Battle Scroll once you have completed the Scion of the Gods Story Mission which, story wise at least will conclude your time in the Bakumatsu Era. You will need to go through the Pleasure District in the Shimabara region taking out a good number of Yoaki as you go aiming for the same boss arena you went to in the Sweet Sound of Strings Story Mission.
Once you get there you will have several female Yokai to bring down including an Ubume, Tsurara-Onna and a Flying Bolt. After which you then have a triple boss fight to clear consisting of a Hino-Enma, Joro-Gumop and a Kasha. None of these ladies will take it easy on you so return the favour and put the down. The biggest threat for me was the Juro-Gumo as not only is she a truck sized spider, her attacks can drastically slow you down.
Shinsengumi: Best Of Five
Recommended Level: 128.
Rewards: x1 Yokai Teardrop.
The Shinsengumi: Best of Five Sub Mission will become available at the Battle Scroll once you have cleared the Scion of the Gods Story Mission and it is brutal to say the least. You essentially need to take out 5 Shinsegumi Samurai back to back all of who can kill you in 1-2 hits if you’re lucky. The Shinsengumi you will need to defeat in this Sub Mission are much tougher versions of the bosses you will fight throughout several other Myths and Sub Missions in the Bakumatsu Era who are:
- Nagakura Shinpachi.
Fought in the Peerless Katana Myth. - Saito Hajime.
Fought in the Shinsengumi Scheme Myth. - Hijikata Toshizo.
Can be fought in the Kiyomizu Defiled Sub Mission. - Kondo Isami.
Can be fought in the Kiyomizu Defiled Sub Mission. - Okita Soji.
Can be fought in the Solitary Blade Sub Mission which is essential to remove Okita Soji from the Crucible in the Scion of the Gods Story Mission.
Overcome the challenge and bring the 5 Shinsengumi down being very cautious to conserve your resources as 1 slip, 1 mistimed block or over use of your Elixirs will see you back at the Shrine. If needs be, roll the credits then come back and have another go at this Sub Mission, they are optional after all.
That’s how to complete all 7 of the NIOH 3 1864 CE Bakumatsu Sub Missions. Are you going to be replaying any of these?.
