The 1622 CE Edo Era holds the first mission in the game which essentially serves as a tutorial and is also where all of the Training Missions can be found at the Battle Scroll providing you have spoken to the appropriate NPC in the Eternal Rift. The Training Missions are very important as they hold Skills and unlockables in your skill tree with the Ninjitsu Spells you can unlock in the later Training Missions being incredibly useful.
1622 CE Edo Walkthrough
The 1622 CE Edo Era isn’t a traditional Era and as such I have changed the usual Walkthrough structure which is now being broken down into the following 3 categories:
Story Mission
There is 1 story mission which is tied to the 1622 CE Edo Era at the Battle Scroll which is the first mission in the game called:
The Fall Of Edo Castle
Recommended Level: 1.
The Fall of Edo Castle is the first mission in NIOH 3 so pick a Samurai weapon and put down your brother then push through the Yokai to Hattori Hanzo which is where you pick up a Ninja weapon. Kill the next set of Yokai and drop down the well when prompted where you will then die to Tokugawa Kunimatsu to finish the mission off.

There are 3 Myths you can complete in the Eternal Rift which strictly speaking isn’t part of the 1622 CE EDo realm as you aren’t able to access them from the Battle Scroll but that said if you need the guides for them please refer to the NIOH 3 Eternal Rift Myths to see how all 3 can be started and completed.
Training Missions
The 12 Training Missions you can begin and turn in the 1622 CE Edo Era most of which are locked behind Story progression and require you to speak to a certain NPC to begin them.

- The Way of Onmyo: Veteran.
Basic Controls
Work through the basic controls. Seems a bit silly putting this in the Battle Scroll when you have already pushed through to the Eternal Rift but there we go.
Expanded Controls
Learn about the Ki Pulse which is very important if you play as Samurai as it regenerates a good portion of your Ki meaning you can attack and block for longer than you ever would with it. Simple press of R1 when the lights shine around you and it will need to become second nature. Alternatively, switch to Ninja and forget all about Ki Pulsing.
Training Ground
In the Training Ground you can go through and fight several different enemy types which is good in principle but given the wider variety of the Yokai and Human enemies found throughout the game, especially in the Warring States you might as well just get out there and learn through progress.
The Way Of The Warrior: Novice
Pre-Requisite: Clear the Crucible Manifested story mission.
Rewards: x1 Samurai’s Locks, x1 Samurai Training Robe, x1 Smithing Text: Samurai Training Robe, x1 Samurai Training Hakama.
The Way of the Warrior: Novice mission can be started by speaking to Yagyu Munemori in the Eternal Rift which then unlocks the mission at the Battle Scroll. In this mission you will need to engage and defeat Yagyu who is a highly skilled, powerful Samurai and whilst you’re fighting Yagyu Munemori, if you’re a purist then go full Samurai mode but if you favour Ninja you can switch to that and give him a beating against his vocation.
The Way Of The Ninja: Novice
Pre-Requisite: Clear the Crucible Manifested story mission.
Rewards: x1 Ninja’s Locks, x1 Ninja Training Robe, x1 Smithing Text: Ninja Training Robe, x1 Ninja Training Hakama.
The Way of the Ninja: Novice mission can be accessed by speaking to Hattori Hanzo in the Eternal Rift then going to the Battle Scroll. You will need to defeat the Ninja in the mission who can be tough but thankfully they never seem to use that Critical Attack they can later in the game where they slam a bomb into you which usually results in a double fatality. Kill them all to conclude the mission.
The Way Of Onmyo: Novice
Pre-Requisite: Clear the Crucible Manifested story mission.
Rewards: x1 Samurai’s Locks, x1 Secret Skills Text: Awakening.
Once you have access to the Eternal Rift you can speak to Saito Fuku who is up on the first floor of the building where the Shrine is several times to make the Way of Onmyo: Novice mission available at the Battle Scroll. You will need to take down the following waves of Yokai to complete the training:
- Wave 1: x1 Crucible Wasp, x1 Gaki.
- Wave 2: x1 Yamainu.
With all 3 Yokai down regardless of whether you used the equipped Onmyo or not, turn the mission in with Saito.
The Way Of The Warrior: Adept
Pre-Requisite: Clear the Sacred Mountain Defiled story mission.
Rewards: x1 Samurai’s Locks, x1 Great Tengu Blade, x1 Samurai Swordmaster’s Robe.
The Way of the Warrior: Adept mission can be started by speaking to Yagyu Munemori in the Eternal Rift once you have defeated the Great Tengu boss which then unlocks the mission at the Battle Scroll. In this training mission you will need to engage and defeat Yagyu Munemori who hits incredibly hard so don’t get caught up in a combo otherwise it will be a very short training session.
The Way Of The Ninja: Adept
Pre-Requisite: Clear the Sacred Mountain Defiled story mission.
Rewards: x1 Ninja’s Locks, x1 Demontear Ninja Sword, x1 Demon Fang Kusarigama, x1 Iga Jonin Ninja Greaves.
The Way of the Ninja: Adept mission can be started by speaking to Hattori Hanzo once you’re in the Heian Era and have defeated the Great Tengu boss. You will be in a 1 vs 1 against Hattori Hanzo, an incredibly proficient Ninja who can wreck you if you let him so stay agile and dodge to the side to avoid most of the attacks.
The Way Of Onmyo: Adept
Pre-Requisite: Clear the Sacred Mountain Defiled story mission.
Rewards: Unlock Soul Core Management at the Shrine Menu, x1 Ninja’s Locks, x1 Ninja Shinto Priest’s Hakama.
Speak to Saito Fuku once the Great Tengu boss has been defeated to unlock the Adept Onmyo training at the Battle Scroll which tasks you with bringing down 3 waves of Yokai whilst having Onmyo magic items to use which are there to help.
- Wave 1: x1 Fire Oni-Bi, x1 Yambiko.
- Wave 2: x1 Adult Bakegani.
- Wave 3: x1 Lesser Umi-Bozu, x1 Water Oni-Bi x1 Sunakake-Baba.
You can just get in there and batter the enemies or you can play with the Onmyo magic, either way kill every enemy to conclude the Way of Onmyo: Adept training.
The Way Of The Warrior: Veteran
Pre-Requisite: Clear the Light of Hope story mission.
The Way Of The Ninja: Veteran
Pre-Requisite: Clear the Light of Hope story mission.
Rewards: x1 Ninja’s Locks, x1 Smithing Text: Demoneater Ninja Sword, x1 Smithing Text: Demon Fang Kusarigama.
The Way of the Ninja: Veteran can be started by speaking to Hattori Hanzo in the Eternal Rift and it will pit you against Hattori Hanzo in a one vs one and don’t go expecting an easy ride here. If Hanzo decides that it’s your time to die then so be it, he will unleash a flurry of hard to dodge Ki smashing attacks which precede a grapple attack that hits harder than ever before. Use your skills you have learnt to get to this point in the game. If you can bring Hiruko down you can defeat Hattori Hanzo.
The Way Of Onmyo: Veteran
Pre-Requisite: Clear the Light of Hope story mission.
Rewards: x1 Samurai’s Locks, x1 Ninja High Priest’s Headgear, Secret Skills Text: Summoning Basics, x1 Secret Skills Text: Amplification.
The Way of Onmyo: Veteran mission can be started by speaking to Saito Fuku once you have access to the Bakumatsu Era and tasks you with bringing down Saito Fuku herself who is, as you would expect, incredibly proficient in Onmyo Magic. Unfortunately for Saito, you have already dealt with some of the toughest bosses in the game meaning she will be little more than a bump in the road. Put her down without holding back to complete the mission.
That’s the 1622 CE Edo walkthrough complete, I hope it helped you get through the Training Missions and Myths.
