The 1190 CE Heian is the second Era of NIOH 3 and one where you will suffer as you make your way through. If you found the Warring States a challenge, that’s nothing compared to wait awaits you in the 12th century. This place is nasty from the get go with you encountering Karasu Tengu and fighting your way through every Element the game has to offer as well as having some of the toughest areas and missions in the game.
1190 CE Heian Walkthrough
There is plenty to do in the Heian Era and given the amount of and variation the collectibles, missions and bosses have I will break the Heian Era down into the following 11 categories which are:
Bosses
There are 28 bosses to take down as you make your way through the Heian Era. Several are optional but the majority can be found either through the story, in the Myths or out in the World. Refer to the NIOH 3 1190 CE Heian bosses for a look at how to find and take them all down.
Chijiko
Chijiko are acquired by shooting them out of the sky then petting them where you will receive a Transformed Art for one of the many weapon classes and there are 9 to be collected in the Heian Era. Refer to the NIOH 3 1190 CE Heian Chijiko for a look at how to find all 9.

Enemy Bases are strongholds which have either Yokai or Humans inside a set area and you need to go in and clear out all of the enemies for the base to be reclaimed for the people of Japan. One of the Enemy Bases is part of a Myth and has a boss at the end of it so make sure you’re well geared before going into them. Dark Realms in the Heian Era aren’t considered Enemy Bases, however, 1 Enemy Base does have a Dark Realm over it. Refer to the NIOH 3 1190 CE Heian Enemy Bases to see how to clear all 6.
Hot Springs
Hot Springs are a good way to take 5 from the chaos of the combat and gameplay as well as giving you small, incremental healing benefits as long as you’re in the Spring. The most important part of the Hot Springs though is each one you bathe in will give you 2 Yokai Teardrops which you can use at a Sudama shop for some pretty decent items.
There are 8 Hot Springs in the Heian Era and there’s even 1 in the Crucible during the Frozen City, Blazing Tree story mission which can be replayed at the Battle Scroll if you miss it on your first run. Refer to the NIOH 3 1190 CE Heian Hot Springs to see where all 8 can be found.
Kodama
Kodama are green Sprites who can be collected by clearing the local area of aggro’d enemies then holding R1 to collect the Kodama as long as they aren’t hiding in their hats. You will then receive Kodama Merit which you can use at a Shrine to activate a Kodama Blessing increasing Elixir drop rate / efficacy so these little dudes are well worth sniffing out.
There are 20 Kodama to find in the Heian Era and they can be found across near enough every region and most of them are tucked behind bosses, Bases or progression. Refer to the NIOH 3 1190 CE Heian Kodama to see where each of these little dudes can be found.
Lesser Crucibles
Lesser Crucibles are small, closed off sections of the map which sometimes lock out the main path through an area you need to progress the story of NIOH 3, however, most of the Lesser Crucibles are found off the beaten track. Clear all of the enemy waves and with 1 Lesser Crucible holding a Kamaitachi boss you need to be pretty powerful to clear them all. Once the Yokai are dead you can then break the Crucible Spike at the back of the Lesser Crucible to then cleanse the area completely. Myths
Myths in NIOH 3 are essentially non-replayable Sub Missions as in you only get to do the Myths once per playthrough which is a shame as some of them are a lot better than the repeatable Sub Missions with a small handful of exceptions which cause Myths to, in part, be playable via the Battle Scroll.
Myths will be marked on the Map as well as you get close to the area where they can be started or by upgrading your Exploration Level to then reveal the Map and all other elements found inside a given region. Scampuss
Scampuss are small, Yokai Cats who, once you get close and try to pet will be startled and run away, it’s down to you to give chase and track the Scampuss down which is a lot easier after you acquire the Gale Sprint once you clear the Crucible Manifested story mission. There are 3 Scampuss you need to chase down in the Heian Era. Refer to the NIOH 3 1190 CE Heian Scampuss to see how to successfully chase all of them down.
Six Jizo
Six Jizo are stone monuments dedicated to 6 legendary Monks and you pray at them similarly to how you would pray at a Shrine. Some Jizo will require you to make offerings to them where as others need to be rebuilt before they can be used.
When you pray at a Six Jizo you will receive a new currency called Jizo Merit which you can use to unlock special blessings at the Shrines similar to the way you unlock Kodama Blessings except these Jizo Blessing are focused around the Crucible increasing things like melee damage and Elixir drop rate which, if you have been to the Crucible I won’t need to tell you how valuable increasing these stats can be. Story Missions
Main Missions are there to advance the story in NIOH 3 and will be marked on your map with a gold circle indicating where you need to go. However, NIOH 3 is by no means a simple or easy game by any stretch of the imagination so I strongly recommend you go through every area, acquire very collectible, clear all of the Lesser Crucibles and Enemy Bases as doing so will increase your stats in that region as well as give you some pretty decent rewards along the way. Sub Missions
Sub Missions in NIOH 3 are usually Myths which turn into Sub Missions or they can be standalone missions which usually hold a boss but always hold some sort of reward and unlike in the first 2 NIOH games, the Sub Misisons are completely optional.
Given the difficulty of some of the Sub Missions you will be thankful that they are optional as well as one mission to note is where you need to bring down the 5 toughest bosses in the first Era back to back with only momentary respite to collect the loot and hopefully Elixer(s) the previous boss dropped.
