NIOH 3 is packed full of bosses both optional and mandatory all of which having their styles, challenges and rewards. Here we will go over all of the bosses you can face as you make your way through the second era in the game, 1190 CE Heian of which there are 30 available.
The Bosses present in the second era are mostly elemental based and heavily lean into magical as well as being physically overwhelming making them the perfect blend of challenging and dangerous. Give what you have taken down in the Warring States which you need to do before you can access the Heian era you will be well versed now in how NIOH 3 works and plays. Use that experience and knowledge you have to help you bring down the bosses you’ll face in the 12th century Japan setting.
Heian Bosses
The bosses in the Heian Era are a mix of story bosses, sub mission bosses, myth bosses, World bosses and Masters most of who you will need to take down as you work towards completing NIOH 3 with some others being completely optional and tucked away at the back of a mission or area you won’t need to go as part of the main game. I have broken the bosses in the Heian Era down into 5 main categories where they can be found which are as follows:
Story Bosses
There are 5 bosses who you will need to take down as you progress through the story in the Heian Era all of who are as follows:
Premium gamer mugs, dishwasher safe, free delivery.
Shop For Your Mug NowGreat Tengu
Mission: Sacred Mountain Defiled.
The Great Tengu is a Wind Priest who can fly, grab, send wind shockwaves and slam you around with his cane, all in all this is as unpleasant as his nose is large. Think Pinocchio under questioning and you’ll be there with this dude. Use ranged attacks if you can, plenty of magic and plenty of Ninjitsu whilst staying away from him as much as possible. As he’s the first boss in the Heian Era it would be wise for you to revisit the Warring States main missions a few times just to level up a bit more if you need to as this guy can seriously make you question your ability in taking on the 12th century!.
Otoroshi
Mission: Black feather Sanctuary.
The Otoroshi boss is a very tough one to deal with as it has an extreme amount of range and the ability to disappear before it teleports to where you will usually be after dodging leaving you open to eat a big attack like a slam or a wing slice. When the Crow goes into the Yokai Realm it stands up and can spawn large ice crystals designed to flatten you back to the Shrine so avoid them as best as you can then take care for the glyphs which can shred your ki if guarding and go straight throwing your health bar as well.
That burst attack with the clap has a special place in my anxieties as it sends a massive shockwave through you so dodging to the side several times is the only way to avoid the attack unless you can burst break it of course. Fire works well as does lightning, Ice and Water aren’t very effective but they aren’t effective throughout the Heian Era save for a handful of circumstances so make good use of what you until you can bring this Budgie down.
Ibaraki Doji
Mission: The Oni of Rajomon.
The Ibaraki Doji boss is a lightning Goddess who can fill half the arena with lightning and grab you with a massive extended throw that you need to know when to either dodge back or dodge to the side to avoid and you’ll only know that through experience. If it was just the lightning she wouldn’t be that bad but that sword of hers and the attacks she can perform have a special place in hell for me. Delayed timings and range make this a very challenging fight.
I recommend going in with Wind or Fire to inflict a heavy amount of damage, Water and Ice is the best but it’s rare to get water offence this early in the game so if you have been lucky, use Water but if not, Wind and Fire elements are a lot more common but either way you need to overcome the challenge to be able to cleanse the seal to progress the story.
Kajiwara Kagetoki
Mission: Subterfuge at the Abandoned Shrine.
Kajiwara Kagetoki is a boss who loves to summon Yokai and they can become problematic. Before we get into the fight, ensure you have opened the wooden doors to the left of the boss door as it creates a shortcut back to the Shrine. Without the doors being open you will need to run all the way back through the region again taking out all of the freshly spawned Yokai.
Kajiwara wields 2 Hatchets and he does love to throw them around the arena which gives him a deadly amount of range and it can be challenging to get close so use plenty of aerial attacks as Kajiwara rarely comes down at you with vertical attacks. Avoid the Yokai and punish Kajiwara at every opportunity until you bring this guy down. Surprisingly rough fight this one.
Minamoto No Yoritomo
Mission: Frozen City, Blazing Tree.
Minamoto no Yoritomo is the boss who holds the Crucible in the Heian Era and this guy is a long range Wind Elemental Master who can seriously ruin your day be it with shockwaves, AOE attacks or s ground splitting quake attack you don’t want to get caught up in unless you’re a fan of revisiting the Shrine.
Fight through the Crucible and use the Crucible to get some better gear as weapons and armour will have come a long way since the A Fiery Invasion Crucible in the Warring States, this means you can take a lot more damage as well as dealing it as well and if you find weapons with Fire or Lightning damage plus Wind reduction armour, you will have a much better chance of staying alive against Minamoto.
Myth Bosses
There are 11 bosses who you will need to take down as you make your way through the 8 Myths in the Heian Era which are as follows:
Yasha
Location: Funaokayama, Horinji Temple Bridge.
Yasha will be in the building you can open once you clear the Enemy Base in the Funaokayama District with Minamoto no Yoshitsune during the Follow the Soldier’s Shadow Myth. Use the Grubby Iron Key to open the door then go through and get ready for a tough fight as Yasha’s attacks are wide and the room is very small meaning you have little room to move out of the way.
One-Eyed Oni + Gaki
Location: Sagano, Horiike of Arashiyama.
The One-Eyed Oni boss will spawn near the end of the Search of Eternal Youth Myth in the centre of the Nishiichi District. There will be a Gaki who joins in the fight after a few seconds so be careful not to fall off the ledge. Put both bosses down which is a lot easier if you use ranged Onmyo or Ninjitsu given the small platform you’re on.
Tsurara-Onna
Location: Sagano, Horiike of Arashiyama.
The Tsurara-Onna boss will spawn at the end of the Unwavering Hope Myth which you can begin in Sagano after clearing the Lesser Crucible. Work through the 2 markers collecting the items then climb the steps to the temple. Take care in this fight as her combos can shred your health down so use Fire to counter the Ice for maximum damage.
Demon Slayer
Closest Shrine: Hachijo, Rajomon: Suzuka Avenue.
The Demon Slayer is a Cestus Master who you need to spawn as part of the Box’s Guardian Myth. Punish him with hard hitting attacks whilst avoiding getting caught up in the combos he likes to use.
Ninja Yoki
Closest Shrine: Hachijo, Rajomon: Suzuka Avenue.
The Ninja Yoki boss will be Summoned by the Villager at the end of the Box’s Guardian Myth along with a standard One-Eyed Oni. You know what to do by this point in the game.
Magatsu Warrior
Closest Shrine: Rokuhara, Gojo Bridge.
You will fight the Magatsu Warrior at the end of the Thoughts Bequeathed Myth along with some other Yokai so ensure you don’t dodge off the edge into the water and put this thing down as quick as you can.
Enenra
Closest Shrine: Hachijo, Rajomon: Mibu Avenue.
The Enenra will spawn in once you have accessed the 3rd Picture Scroll in the Yokai Horde Picture Scroll Myth which is a secret myth in the Kamo Village region of the Heian Era and one I recommend you read in full before starting as it leads into a missable trophy. The Enenra is initially Wind based which is weird for an Enenra as they have always been exclusively fire. The Enenra did switch to Fire when it was down to about 30% health so bear that in mind if Elemental defence and offence play an important role in your current build.
Waira
Location: Sagano, Matsuo-taisha: Monastic Cave.
You will need to fight the Waira boss as part of the True Samurai Of Kamakura Myth after teaming up with Kajiwara Kagetoki. Head through the tunnels to the small cave and put this Yokai down whilst also watching out for the Gaki Mother in the same cave.
Kajiwara Kagetoki
Location: Sagano, Matsuo-taisha: Monastic Cave.
Once you have put the Waira down in the True Samurai Of Kamakura Myth you will then need to return to Kajiwara’s fallen comrades where he will then engage you in a fight and this guy can be a challenge as he has a seemingly incredibly high health pool and the ability to summon multiple Guardian Spirits. Use your skills and drop him where he’ll then become humbled and pack it in with the aggression.
Minamoto No Yoshitsune
Location: Mt.Kurama, Mt. Kurama-Temple Lodgings.
After completing the Thoughts Bequeathed Myth and killing all of the Masters in the Heian Era you will be able to access the Triple Triumph Myth which tasks you with taking down Minamoto no Yoshitsune who is in full Yokai form and one his Brother should never have been able to beat.
Minamoto no Yoshitsune in Yokai form is a nightmare to deal with as he is as fast as light and can fill large portions of the arena with swords, send brutal energy waves and also has a delayed throw which comes from the feet whilst doing a front flip so it’s a pain to gauge the timing for. Use Lightning and avoid Wind whilst defending against the latter as well as Ice if you can to help increase your chances of staying alive and remember, you can always come back later in the game and have another go.
Sub Mission Bosses
There are 6 Sub Missions in the Heian Era which holds the following bosses:
- Ryomen Sukuna.
- Minamoto no Yoahitsune.
- Beneath a Pure White Flag.
- Tomoe Gozen.
- Nasu no Yoichi.
- Kajiwara Kagetoki.
- Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
Ryomen Sukuna
Mission: The Mystery of Rajomon.
Proceed through to the end of the Mystery of Rajomon Sub Mission to where the Great Gaki is standing and put it down as well as all other Yokai which show up for a fight. Ryomen Sukuna will then spawn in and he is a lot tougher than the version you can fight in the Warring States and he’s also been training hard learning new moves and throws which can annihilate you.
Ensure you conserve your resources in the previous fights to stand a better chance against Sukuna and make sure you avoid throws throws and arrow volleys. Go in with either Lightning or Wind offence whilst guarding against both Fire and Water. Rough fight this one.
Minamoto No Yoshitsune
Mission: Triple Triumph.
You will need to complete the Triple Triumph Myth in Mt. Kurama before you can replay the Triple Triumph Sub Mission at the Battle Scroll which tasks you with bringing Minamoto No Yoshitsune down again.
Beneath A Pure White Flag
Mission: Beneath a Pure White Flag.
The Beneath a Pure White Flag Sub Mission will become available at the Battle Scroll once you have cleared the Triple Triumph Myth and tasks you with bringing down 4 powerful bosses back to back culminating in another fight against Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Good luck with this one, it’s rough in the mid game so come back once you’re comfortable in Bakumatsu to have a better chance of survival.
World Bosses
There are 4 bosses who you can take down throughout the Heian Era most of who are optional and they are as as follows:
All Seeing Mage
Location: Kamo Village, Kamo Village.
The All Seeing Mage is in a building to the South West of the Kamo Village district, just West of the Funaokayama Shrine and can be a pain to deal with as he not only has very powerful Onmyo and 2 Mages who are there to get in the way more than anything else, he also has 2 very large, very powerful Swords he swings with high efficiency when it comes to stripping your health bar down. Use this fight as a good experience for how nasty Onmyo magic attacks can be if you don’t get out of their way in time.
Onryoki
Location: Sagano, Horinji Temple Bridge.
Rest at the Horinji Temple Bridge Shrine in the Funaokayama district then go over the bridge to face off against an Onryoki. There will be 2 Dwellers as well so deal with them whilst avoiding the big guy’s attacks. Ensure you don’t fall through the gap in the bridge as you bring the Onryoki down.
Kamaitachi
Location: Rokuhara, Kamo Riverbank.
Head through and clear the Kamo Riverbank Lesser Crucible in the Rokuhara region which will have 3 waves of Yokai to take down, 3 Spiders, 2 Jailers then a very annoyed Kamaitachi who, if you haven’t fought one before is a Wind Cat who can literally blend your health bar away with brutal tail spins and overwhelming power. You may well not enjoy this fight or be clearing the Lesser Crucible until much later in the game. This Feline Yokai is not in the mood to allow you to break that Crucible spike!.
Demon Of Envy
Location: Hachijo, Anneibo Temple.
Rest at the Anneibo Temple Shrine which you can access after you clear the Enemy Base then go up the stairs before jumping left to the awning and drop down into the cavern to your right. The Demon of Envy is a fire based phenom who can fill half the arena with fire bursts which would make any Pyromancer blush. These attacks are frequent and hard to avoid as is her throw which she uses all of her tentacles to sweep across the arena as she comes towards you so even dodging to the side isn’t a guaranteed avoid, just keep your distance as much as you can.
Don’t be surprised if you’re already in Bakumatsu and the Demon of Envy still kicks your ass, she is incredibly challenging and designed to be more end game than mid game. The fight will be available even before you clear the Enemy Base but unless you’re virtually fireproof you won’t stand much of a chance against her early on. Ensure you attack with Water, Wind and Lightning to inflict maximum damage and if you have any gear with Fire damage reduction, chuck it on and hope it helps.
Usui Sadamitsu
Location: Rokuhara, Kamo Riverbank.
Pass the Gaki Chief then go right before entering the Yasaka Shrine in Rokuhara, take the Spirit Vein across the gap which you can only do once you have completed the Sweet Sound of Strings Story Mission in the Bakumatsu Era as you need to swing across the gap.
Once you have crossed the Spirit Vein you will be in a Dark Realm which you need to work through and it’s a tough one with a Gozuki and plenty of Yokai lurking around so kill them all. Once the Dark Realm is purged you can enter the building which will be on your left as you climb the stairs inside of which will be Usui Sadamitsu, a powerful Samurai but one who is nowhere near as tough as the bosses you will have taken down to get into Bakumatsu in the first place.
Masters
Masters are incredibly skilled Warriors most of who you won’t even be able to fight until later in the game as you need Guardian Spirits to access them and for good reason. Most of these guys can kill you in a heartbeat so power yourself up before you go against these guys who are as follows:
Tomoe Gozen
Closest Shrine: Kamo Village, Funaokayama.
Tomoe Gozen is a Switchglaive Master who you can fight just East of the Funaokayama Shrine after you have completed the Follow the Soldier’s Shadow Myth for Minamoto no Yoshitsune and she uses all 3 stances with a high degree of efficiency so pay attention to where the Switchglaive is and use one yourself for a time to learn. For example if the Scythe is over the shoulder expect a lot of heavy attacks coming down vertically. Where as if the Switchglaive is small and in one hand she will utilise fast combos to break your ki so one you master her stances you will have a much better chance of taking her down.
Demon Slayer
Closest Shrine: Hachijo, Rajomon: Suzuka Avenue.
The Demon Slayer is a Cestus Master who you will need to take down as part of the Box’s Guardian Myth and if you let him he can really dish out some punishment. Use Sloth Talisman or the Flying Bolt Soul Core to slow the Master down then punish him with elemental attacks or heavy melee whilst he tries to recover.
Shinran
Closest Shrine: Awawa no Tsuji, Kamo Riverbank.
Shinran can be fought once you skate across the water using the Spirit Vein then climb the stairs and enter the building where this Splistaff Master is waiting to have a chat with your health bar. This guy doesn’t only use a Splitstaff to high effect he also has a full compliment of Ninjitsu and Onmyo Talismans to help ruin your day and most of the magic hits a lot harder than he does. Come at Shinran from the side or from above and show him how a true Master wields weaponry.
Nasu No Yoichi
Closest Shrine: Nishiichi, Driftwood Fortress.
Naso no Yoichi can be a nightmare to “fight” as you initially need to get to him. You can go for ranged attacks but I really don’t recommend it as you have limited ammo and this Archer can fire for days without ever running out. Instead you want to use the sides for covering and sprint forward remembering to block as needed or dodge if you’re an expert at timing. Jump up the left side of the rocks and give this long range pain a beating he won’t soon forget. Dude is fairly proficient up close as well with those Dual Swords so don’t get complacent.
That’s all of the NIOH 3 1190 CE Heian Bosses, who was your favourite boss to deal with?.
